//How many votes will a candidate need to be elected?
We use preference voting which means that students get to decide their favourite (and least favourite!) candidates. Each voter can rank all candidates in order of preference – number 1 for their first choice, 2 for their second and so on. If no-one gets over 50% of the vote, the candidate with the lowest number 1 votes is eliminated and their votes go to their 2nd preference and so on. This is important as it means that every vote counts.
If we are electing two or more candidates to a particular position (such as NUS Annual Conference delegate) we use Single Transferable Voting (STV.) Although more complicated, students still vote in preference order, but when we are counting, we divide the total number of votes by the number of positions to reach a quota. If no candidates get over the quota, we elimate the candidate with the fewest votes, and redistribute them in preference order. When a candidate reaches the quota, their surplus is redistributed according to the preference order of voters. For more information about both voting systems please contact democracy@su.arts.ac.uk.
